Goa Trip Cost: How Much Does a Goa Trip Really Cost?

If you are trying to work out your Goa trip cost, there is no single number that applies throughout the year. The season you travel, where you stay, how you get around and whether you book activities yourself can make a surprisingly big difference.

We learnt this during our own five day Goa trip in May 2025. We travelled as a family of four and initially booked a package that cost us ₹32,000. The package included our stay at VITS Shanti Solitaire, a dinner cruise and the Paradise Island visit. We paid separately for our car, petrol, food and other places we visited.

Interestingly, the experiences we arranged ourselves were the ones we enjoyed and remembered most. The package experiences were disappointing, despite being sold to us at what we understood to be premium prices.

So, if you are planning a Goa trip and want a realistic number to start with, around ₹30,000 to ₹40,000 for a family of four for five days, excluding flights, is a reasonable lower season planning range when you book carefully and travel independently. Peak season can push the same type of trip considerably higher.

These are based on our experience and observed prices rather than a fixed Goa tariff. Your actual Goa trip cost will depend on the type of hotel, activities and transport you choose.

How Much Did Our Goa Trip Cost?

Our Goa package cost ₹32,000. But it is important to understand what that ₹32,000 actually covered.

The package included four nights of accommodation at VITS Shanti Solitaire, a dinner cruise and the Paradise Island visit. It did not cover our car rental, petrol, food or the other places we visited.

We therefore had additional expenses during the trip. We rented a car, paid for fuel, bought food, visited beaches and places around Panjim, explored Fontainhas and visited Froggy Land water park. We also spent around ₹800 on souvenirs.

This is why simply comparing a ₹32,000 Goa package with a ₹30,000 or ₹40,000 independent trip can be misleading. You need to look at what is actually included.

In our case, the package gave us three major components, but some of those components turned out to be poor experiences. The things we arranged ourselves cost extra, but those were the parts of the trip that we actually enjoyed.

Our Goa Trip Cost Breakdown

For a family of four travelling for five days, these were some of the costs we experienced or observed during our May trip.

Hotel stay

Accommodation can make a huge difference to your Goa trip cost.

We stayed at VITS Shanti Solitaire, and the hotel was part of our ₹32,000 package. The breakfast was included and was excellent. The swimming pool was also one of the biggest attractions for our children.

However, there was something interesting we learnt from other guests staying at the same hotel.

While our package effectively worked out to around ₹4,000 to ₹5,000 per night for the hotel component, other tourists staying at VITS told us they had booked directly and paid around ₹2,500 per night.

For four nights, that difference is significant.

At ₹2,500 per night, the accommodation would work out to approximately ₹10,000 for four nights. At ₹4,000 to ₹5,000 per night, the same four nights work out to approximately ₹16,000 to ₹20,000.

We cannot say exactly how the tour operator arrived at its package price because we do not know its internal pricing. But our experience made one thing clear: it is worth checking the hotel’s direct price before accepting the accommodation value quoted inside a Goa package.

The difference becomes even more important during peak season. A hotel that can be available at a much lower price during a quieter period can become significantly more expensive during the busiest months.

Goa Hotel Prices Change With the Season

This is probably the biggest factor to keep in mind when calculating your Goa trip cost.

From our experience, November, December and January can be considerably more expensive than the lower priced months. Hotel rates, car rentals, taxis and activities can all move up during periods when demand is high.

For VITS Shanti Solitaire, we observed that the price could be around ₹2,500 per night when booked directly in a lower priced period, while peak season pricing can go up to around ₹13,000 per night.

That is a huge difference for a four night stay.

It means the same family staying in the same hotel can have a very different Goa travel budget simply because they travelled at different times of the year.

This is why we would not recommend taking someone’s Goa trip cost and applying it directly to your own trip without checking the travel dates.

Car Rental in Goa

For a family, we found having our own car much more practical than depending on taxis for every outing.

During the lower priced period, hatchback self drive cars can be available for around ₹900 per day. For five days, that works out to approximately ₹4,500.

There is usually a refundable security deposit as well. In our case, the amount we were dealing with was around ₹3,000. This should not really be treated as a travel expense if it is returned to you, although you do need to have the money available during the rental.

Peak season can push car rental prices up considerably. Based on what we observed, the rental price can increase by as much as 100 percent.

For our five day trip, we spent approximately ₹3,000 on petrol.

So, as a rough lower season planning number, ₹7,500 to ₹8,000 for five days of car rental and fuel is a useful amount to keep in mind for a family, before considering parking or any unexpected costs.

We would also be careful about booking a Goa rental car online without knowing who actually owns and operates the vehicle. We had our own unpleasant experience with a self drive rental arranged online, which we have covered separately.

How Much Does Food Cost in Goa?

Food was relatively easy for us to manage because we are pure vegetarians.

We would use approximately ₹1,500 per day for food for our family of four as a practical figure based on our experience. Over five days, that is around ₹7,500.

Goa has plenty of food options, but we found that eating in a tourist destination can cost more than eating in many other parts of India.

Your food budget can obviously be lower or much higher depending on whether you eat at local places, restaurants, beach shacks, hotels or premium establishments.

For our purposes, ₹1,500 per day gave us a reasonable working number without trying to make the trip unnecessarily expensive.

What About Goa Activities?

Activities are where your Goa trip cost can change very quickly.

We would not recommend putting one large generic amount aside for activities because Goa has everything from inexpensive local attractions to expensive organised experiences.

Our own experience with Froggy Land was a good example.

The entry cost was nominal, and because we reached very late at around 4:30 PM, the people there were kind enough to let the children enjoy some of the rides without charging us for them. It turned out to be a fun experience for the children without becoming a major expense.

That was very different from some of the activities included in our package. We spent money on several places independently, including beaches, Panjim, Fontainhas and other local experiences. Those did not require the kind of premium package pricing we had paid for some of the organised activities.

The Dinner Cruise Was a Good Lesson in Goa Trip Cost

The dinner cruise included in our package was supposed to be one of the highlights. Our package effectively charged around ₹2,000 per person for the cruise.

While on the cruise, however, we spoke to other passengers and learnt that some of them had booked the same three to four hour cruise, including dinner and entertainment, for around ₹800 per person.

That difference caught our attention immediately. The experience itself did not feel like a premium cruise to us. There was no air conditioning, the kitchen conditions were poor and the information we had been given about separate vegetarian and non vegetarian kitchens did not match what we saw.

This is an important point when calculating your Goa holiday cost. A higher price does not automatically mean a better experience. If you are interested in a particular cruise, it can be worth checking the actual operator and its direct pricing rather than simply accepting the activity because it appears inside a premium holiday package.

Paradise Island Made Us Reconsider Package Activities

Paradise Island was another major part of our package and one of the experiences that made us rethink how we would plan a future Goa trip.

The overall experience was poor for us. We found the facilities unhygienic, the in house boat toilet was particularly unpleasant and the speed boat and rescue boat operations did not give us much confidence in their professionalism. The in house boat coordinator was also rude and harsh in our experience.

The children still enjoyed some of the water activities, but that did not change our overall view of the experience. After this visit, we became much more cautious about paying for organised Goa amusements simply because they were included in a package.

For us, this was one of the biggest lessons from the trip: when budgeting for Goa, don’t just ask how much an activity costs. Ask what you are actually getting for that money.

A Cab Ride Can Also Change Your Goa Budget

Transport costs can catch you off guard in Goa. We had one 17 km cab journey that cost us ₹2,000 even after negotiation and no A/C.

That is a substantial amount for a relatively short distance, especially when you compare it with the cost of renting a car for an entire day. This was one of the reasons we preferred having our own car for the rest of the trip.

Of course, self drive is not suitable for everyone. But for a family planning several places in different parts of Goa, it is worth comparing the total cost of rental plus fuel against multiple taxi journeys.

What Would a 5 Day Goa Trip Cost for a Family of Four?

Based on our May 2025 experience, we would use ₹30,000 to ₹40,000 excluding flights as a practical starting point for a family of four travelling for five days during a lower priced period.

A basic example could look like this:

This is a planning estimate based on the prices and experiences we encountered. It is not a fixed Goa tariff, and the hotel and activity components can change substantially.

We would therefore keep ₹30,000 to ₹40,000 as a more comfortable planning budget rather than trying to travel with an exact ₹29,000 limit. Flights are not included because airfare depends heavily on where you are travelling from and when you book.

What Happens to the Budget During Peak Season?

This is where the difference can become substantial.

If a hotel that costs around ₹2,500 per night in a lower priced period reaches ₹13,000 during peak season, four nights alone could move from around ₹10,000 to approximately ₹52,000.

Car rental can also increase, and popular activities and transport can become more expensive when demand is high.

So a family of four that might reasonably plan around ₹30,000 to ₹40,000 excluding flights during a lower priced period should not assume that the same budget will work during peak season.

For peak season, we would keep a significantly larger buffer. Around ₹60,000 to ₹80,000 or more excluding flights can be a more realistic planning range for a family of four, depending heavily on the hotel and activities chosen.

The important point is not that every family will spend ₹60,000 or ₹80,000. It is that accommodation alone can change the calculation dramatically during peak periods.

Is a Goa Package Cheaper Than Planning the Trip Yourself?

Our experience made us question this assumption. We paid ₹32,000 for a package covering our hotel, dinner cruise and Paradise Island. We then had to pay separately for our car, fuel, food and the places we actually wanted to explore. The package itself was not necessarily wrong simply because it cost ₹32,000. The bigger issue was the value we received from the individual components.

The hotel was good. The breakfast was excellent and the swimming pool was a major hit with our children. But other guests told us they had booked the same hotel directly for around ₹2,500 per night.

The cruise was charged at around ₹2,000 per person through our package, while other passengers told us they had paid around ₹800. Paradise Island was another experience that did not meet our expectations. Meanwhile, some of the experiences we paid for separately were inexpensive and memorable.

This is why we would compare the individual components of a package with their direct prices before booking, rather than assuming a package automatically represents a saving.

Where We Would Spend More on a Future Goa Trip

We would not try to reduce every expense. A comfortable and clean hotel, a reliable car and good quality family activities are areas where we would rather pay a little more than deal with poor service. We would also spend more on a cruise if we had researched it ourselves and found one that genuinely offered better facilities, food and entertainment.

What we would avoid is paying more simply because an activity is described as premium. Our Paradise Island and cruise experiences taught us that the word premium does not tell you enough about the actual experience.

Where We Would Save Money

The easiest savings would be through independent planning. We would check the hotel’s direct price before accepting a package hotel. We would compare car rental rates before arriving. We would identify the actual operator behind activities and compare direct prices wherever possible. We would also travel during a lower priced period if our schedule allowed it.

This is where the difference between peak and lower season becomes especially useful. Saving several thousand rupees on accommodation can have a much bigger effect on your Goa trip cost than trying to save a few hundred rupees on food.

When Is Goa Cheapest to Visit?

There is no single price throughout the year, but our May experience showed us how much lower priced periods can change the economics of a Goa trip. November, December and January are periods when we would expect travellers to encounter significantly higher demand and, consequently, higher prices for many travel services. May can be much cheaper for accommodation and car rentals, although the heat is a major consideration.

For a family travelling with young children, we would not choose a month purely because it is cheaper. Our Practical Goa Trip Budget

If we were planning a similar five day Goa trip today, we would start with ₹30,000 to ₹40,000 for a family of four, excluding flights, during a lower priced period.

That would give us roughly:

₹10,000 for accommodation, assuming we found a good direct booking around ₹2,500 per night.

₹4,500 for a five day hatchback rental, based on the lower season rate we experienced.

₹3,000 for petrol.

₹7,500 for food, based on approximately ₹1,500 per day for our family.

₹3,000 to ₹6,000 for activities and sightseeing, depending on what we chose.

And we would keep a little extra for parking, small purchases and unexpected expenses.

During peak season, we would increase this budget considerably, particularly because accommodation can change the calculation so dramatically.

Most importantly, we would book the individual components ourselves rather than assuming that a package is cheaper or better.

Our ₹32,000 package taught us that lesson the hard way. The package gave us a hotel, cruise and Paradise Island visit, but some of our best memories came from the things we arranged ourselves.

For us, that is the real lesson behind Goa trip cost: you do not necessarily need to spend more to have a better Goa holiday. You need to know where your money is going.
